The growth rate of mobile phone sales all over the globe was almost 25% by the end of 2005 but come Christmas 2006 the script has changed completely. Although the worldwide sales of mobile phones are all set to touch the magic mark of a billion/year in 2007, the industry insiders are sceptical about the sustenance of growth rate.

The market in the Asia Pacific region, Latin America and Africa is growing but since the competitive nature of these markets has resulted in cutting down in profit margins, mobile manufacturers still look westwards to boost up their sales. In UK the total revenues for the mobile telephony services for the first quarter of 2005 was £3.3 billion – a rise of 17% compared with the same quarter in 2004. However, in UK and the rest of the world the double digit growth rate of the mobile phone segment will be culminated as the market moves towards saturation.

With the sector making rapid technological advancements, the onus will be on the R&D department of all the mobile manufacturing giants to come with sleeker designs and subtle, but effective, improvisations in the handsets which will appeal to the buyers to upgrade their phone.

Camera phones are latest rage in the market and one of the key features that’s helping the sales of mobile handsets are MMS, but come 2011 the key feature of a mobile handset will be equipped with broadcast mobile TV capability, states market research company Informa Telecoms & Media. This survey also predicted that, by 2011, 55% of all handsets sold will be enabled with music playing functionality.As functionality of the instrument will take precedent over the style quotient in the developed market, like the UK and US, the manufacturers look around for answers which will help them to maintain the tempo which had kept them at the dizzying heights of success for so long.
